OSI model distribute the various aspects of a computer network in 7 distinct layers. It is not a standard itself with the same direction as Ethernet or Token Ring: it is rather a standard of standard. It allows amongst other things has entirely different systems to communicate between them. It was developed by the ISO consortium (International Standards Organization) in 1977. The ISO develops standards for all kind of things, here OSI model is an example.
